Str8line Records brings us a gem of a release in this compilation of predominantly Goth/Post Punk and New wave artist from France.Weaving together artists from different strands, and sometimes time, to present as a whole a disk that is impressive and utterly enjoyable!
Featuring artists such as De Volenges with an angry in your face sound, the more composed No Tears with Robert' Eyes.The legendary and timeless Brotherhood of Pagans who finally makes an appearance again, and hopefully will stay for a long timewith a great song in 'Only Once'.
Too many highlights to name on this compilation with Little Nemo, Wallenberg's fantastic 'The Swell', Joy Disaster, Noctule Sorix, Psychotique?, Jacquy Bitch too name but a few.
This is a must have in anyone's collection that is serious about Goth / Post Punk!

MOVEMENT ONE

With a predominantly Goth/Post-Punk-friendly compilation from France it’s obviously odd to see nothing from Sleeping Children, Deadchovsky or Villa Vortex, but then there’s personal taste and representation from different quarters to contend with. Str8line know what they’re doing and have pulled together strands from different overlapping scenes to create an impressive whole.
de Volanges have a really angry sound for ‘Sweet Times Burn’; abrasive and rebounding energy behind the fraught male vocals. No Tears’ ‘Robert's Eyes’ features, I assume, Robert Smith sampled, waffling away about music, among rain and guitar, vibrating, rattled vocals. Little Nemo’s ‘Anybody Home’ is straightforward purring indie with a delectable chorus and shows how good this is, because I would never have included something like this, but it’s fabulous in its own way. Curtain’s ‘Urban Disease’ has a very robust rhythm bulge, distinctive oily guitar frothing up, and aggrieved vocal spasm; their post-punk livery proudly displayed over a murderous bass and detonating guitar shale.
Brotherhood of Pagans is timeless, slender Goth throughout the vibrant ‘Only Once’, Noctule Sorix ‘The White W’ have the nice sonar buzz coming through their Psy Furs/Cure amalgam but they could have added more stark effort. Corpus Delicti’s ‘Dancing Ghost’ jangles with pained vocals and corkscrewed guitar and grows divinely desperate, Psychotique? are playfully subtle in their dramatics and the annoyingly trendy ‘L'écho Du Corps’ has sinuous stealth. Inhabiting a sly Goth romp with a flat trajectory, Jacquy Bitch makes ‘Détresse’ a bawdy lair, which is almost a literary pun Francais! Oh, forget it.
Charles De Goal, fittingly, sounds the most French so far through a direct ‘Identité’ with bright nagging guitar accompanying the vast vocals. Rise & Fall Of A Decade are doing some gently electronic-washed dance in ‘Tchecheny, My Love.’ A sedate Hide & Seek also move towards ambient composition with ‘The Architect’, with the vocals creating the dynamics to maintain interest and it’s a polite but absorbing encounter. Frustration are the uncouth opposite, barking madly through a torrid electro-punk ‘Blind.’ Joy Disaster are equally rampant through the torrential guitar-rankled ‘Hate You’
Wallenberg are happily bumptious post-punk and ‘The Swell’ has carefree vocals blissfully tumbling over circumspect guitar and a stolid beat. Opera Multi Steel are clearly astutely artistic in giving dark themes space and character. ‘Toujours Ces Chants’ is quite ghostly but richly detailed, almost filmic with sensitive singing. It begins full-blooded and overplayed, then starts to dissipate cleverly. The dour dance of Buzz’s ‘La Ville’ was too bland to interest me, but The Trespass shuffle through a tatty ‘Near Dark’ with reliable vigour and it’s done. An excellent compilation with the majority consistent winners.

FELINEA :
Et une chronique plus qu'élogieuse, s'il était encore besoin de prouver que cette compil est une bombe..
Etre toujours en mouvement est une notion de survie fondamentale mise en musique par Str8Line Records, un label exilé en Essonne. Guidé par Paul Esteves, ce projet de compilation vit le jour pour affirmer l'existence d'une scène musicale francophone de qualité.
A ce titre, la réussite est exemplaire car le choix des groupes est judicieux.
En guise d'intro, le 'Sweet times burn' des belges de De Volanges, un acte résistant dont l'écho plus romantique sera celui de No Tears, avec son 'Robert's eyes' très cold et intensément humain. Le poppysant 'Anybody home' de Little Nemo parviendra à égayer notre écoute par sa mélodie scintillante tandis que l'acidité d' 'Urban disease' de Curtain électrisera la moindre de nos pensées. Brotherhood Of Pagans a nuancé sa vision de l'énergie qui avait fait sa force et propose un 'Only once' à l'impact moins immédiat.
Noctule Sorix, quant à eux, offre avec 'The white W' un titre intuitif ne cherchant pas à troubler l'esprit par de pauvres effets sonores. Titre incontournable de la discographie des niçois de Corpus Delicti, 'Dancing ghost' présente une froideur gothique et une puissance émotionnelle également perceptible chez Psychotique ?, une formation aussi hypnotique qu'énigmatique.
Véritable chef-d'oeuvre au sein de cet acte passionné, le morceau 'Détresse' conçu par l'ex-chanteur de Neva : Jacquy Bitch invite le corps à danser et démontre ce qu'est un son gothique dépourvu de ses clichés réducteurs. "Movement One" remet aussi au goût du jour un talent en quête d' 'Identité', celui de Charles De Goal.
Très attendu, le retour de Rise And Fall Of A Decade dont FELINEA apprécie toujours autant la finesse des orchestrations à l'image de ce sublime 'Tchecheny my love', si engagé et tellement émouvant. Hide & Seek propose quant à lui un 'The architect' à la perspective fuyante vers un horizon serein mis en échec par la folie des guitares de Frustration et de son chanteur dopé par l'instinct de vie.
Point de salut pour l'amoureux des sons aiguisés car voici le 'Hate you' de Joy Disaster, plus vertigineux que les chutes du Niagara. Wallenberg n'est pas en reste avec 'The swell', persuasif malgré la sensation d'un chant pas toujours maîtrisé. Changements de registre avec Opera Multi Steel qui ont souvent pris un malin plaisir à désorienter notre écoute en activant leur cold wave hors normes et Buzz qui dépeint 'La ville' d'une manière spasmodique et électronique.
"Movement One" présente une conclusion lucide avec The Trespass qui signe 'Near dark' pour mieux intensifier l'idée que de l'obscurité s'éveille souvent le talent.
Ce label est en mouvement, puise sa force dans la reconnaissance comme tout acte passionné alors FELINEA continue de croire qu'une compilation peut ouvrir des esprits aux sons de qualité, peut permettre à une scène musicale dite 'underground' d'exister et de se faire entendre. 'Movement One' affiche son écho n°1 alors souhaitons lui d'être suivi par d'autres volumes d'aussi bonnes qualités.

ELEGY n°45 :
Le label Str8line Records à qui l'on doit les très bons albums de No Tears et De Volanges, propose avec la compilation "Movement One" un panorama en dix-huit titres des scènes dark françaises et belge. Il y a les valeurs sûres comme "Dancing Ghost" de Corpus Delecti ou encore "Blind" de Frustration. Il y a aussi les groupes moins connus qui créent la surprise et étonnent, comme Little Nemo, Curtain et Psychotique? Et puis élément indispensable d'une bonne compil': les inédits. Et de ce côté là, "Movement One" nous gâte bien comme il faut avec des nouveaux titres de No Tears, Jacquy Bitch, Charles de Goal, Wallenberg et surtout des revenants Brotherhood of Pagans. Voici assurément une compilation variée (cold wave, goth rock, punk, electro) qui offre suffisament d'intérêt pour s'imposer aux amateurs de la facette la plus rock du mouvement dark.
